What is AI Enabled SaaS? We all have an intuitive feel of what it is but true definitions are hard to find.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled SaaS is any SaaS application where a significant piece of the application functionality is implemented using artificial intelligence.

In most cases the type of AI used is machine learning. Machine learning is a computer application which has the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. All types of machine learning can be used in SaaS applications including supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep learning.

It’s worth noting that in this definition I have not included the use of AI in running a SaaS business. Although there are a variety of ways AI tools can be used to run a SaaS business these tools and their use are generally not significantly unique from their use in other businesses. For example, using a marketing application with AI functionality for a SaaS business is not that different from using that marketing application in other B to B businesses, at least not from an AI functionality perspective.

It is important to understand the distinction of whether a SaaS application is AI enabled because certain types of these applications require special processes and considerations for on boarding and ongoing maintenance of the application and the implementations.
